Breakfast all day at the River Inn Grill

Here along the Russian River, Eggs Benedict for lunch at the River Grill Inn, diner style, along with coffee I can drink black, is just about as good as it gets. I dined with local mover and shaker, Herman Hernandez, and talked about the great plans afoot for this season's music series to be held in downtown Guerneville. It's going to be an amazing experience one evening a week for locals and tourists alike again this summer. Keep your eyes open for the schedule that will be linked from the Russian River Getaways Visitor's Guide.
Sunday at Jenner-by-the-Sea

After a brief intermission, we're back! Along with bringing you fantastic vacation rentals here at the River, we also live and run around the Russian River area, doing cool and interesting things, with and without kids and dogs, so we'll be sharing with you what we find. Today the sun was shining and the air was calm and warm, so BEACH popped right into my mind. I grabbed a friend and a blanket, and we headed out to Jenner-by-the-Sea, where the Russian River meets the Pacific Ocean. We landed at Goat Rock beach (the small end, left at the fork at the bottom of the hill), where we were treated to seals dancing in the waves. At the other end of this beach, those same seals are busy having babies. You can visit with the help of Stewards of Coast and Redwoods: http://www.stewardsofthecoastandredwood ... lwatch.htm. After we'd had our fill of staring at those mesmerizing waves, we stopped at Cafe Aquatica, http://www.cafeaquatica.com/, in Jenner, for coffee, a great view of the Russian River flowing into the ocean, and live music on deck. In other words, we had ourselves a perfect Sunday afternoon! -Rachel

Loretta Lynn concert

Last week I had the honor of seeing that grand lady of pure country music, Loretta Lynn, at the Wells Fargo Performing Arts Center. She sang mostly pieces of songs, saving only Coal Miner's Daughter for the complete treaatment, and she didn't spend much time on nostalgia--just sang her songs, with strong command of the stage. Her two daughters sang introductory songs for their mother, good not great.

But what was great was Chuck Mead's band which headlined Loretta Lynn. These are pure classic rock-a-belly sons---absolutety fantastic and I want to go see them as the headliner. I think I'll see if they have an on-line calendar and maybe are playing closeby.

It's Quixote Winery and such a perfect building I've never before seen. Absolutely worth the drive---the only way to see it is to sign up for a winetasting tour at $25 each; otherwise, they would be inundated with Hundertwasser groupies. Makes me think I would like to do a Hundertwasser tour of his buildings in Europe.

Cemetery Tour

The lovely lady in costume is Jane Barry, president of the Russian River Historical Society. The tour was most interesting, with emphasis on pioneer women. One such woman was Inza Lambert (still an important local family) who was born in Duncans Mills, belonged to every possible organization, drove the Gas Truck when needed during World War II, and if there was no pastor at the Guerneville Community Church, she stood up and gave the service.
The boy's headstone above commemorates 7 year old Harry Olney who ran onto Main Street and was hit by the justice of the peace driving his car, the lad becoming the first vehicular death in west Sonoma County.

A lovely afternoon, after the tour viewing the new part of the cemetery with its AIDS section and unique headstones. A cemetery definitely worth spending some time in.

California's Biggest Apple Pie

The latest mega-creation of students of Windsor High teacher Marie Ganister will be six feet across and weigh about 500 pounds. Every bite will contain organic Sonoma County apple.

Culinary-arts students and helpers will bake it Saturday at Cousteaux French Bakery’s commercial kitchen and Windsor firefighters will lift it from the oven.

Before the pie is trucked down Old Redwood Highway on Sunday, North County Supervisor Mike McGuire and Phil Demery, the county’s director of transportation and public works, will post signs officially renaming the road Old Redwood Pieway — for a day. Give KZST’s Brent Farris credit for the name.

The apple pie, conceived as the largest ever in California, will be ceremoniously sliced and eagerly eaten starting at noon at the Windsor Farmers Market.

Five bucks a serving. A la mode. Thanks to Chris Smith for the coverage.

First Chinook

We are hearing it up and down the California coast,” said Dave Manning, a Sonoma County Water Agency principal environmental specialist. “We should see at least an average number of fish, around 3,000 fish, and hopefully more.”

The first chinook was photographed Sept. 5 swimming through the water agency's fish ladder at Forestville, where the agency has a rubber dam to form a pool for its water-pumping operations.

Seven more have been photographed since then. The peak of the run is between mid October and mid November, when the bulk of the fish will enter the river, Manning said.

“It is an indication that fall is here and a reminder we are managing this river system and habitat to meet the needs of fish,” Manning said. “It is a good feeling to see them return every year.”

The Water Agency has been tracking chinook salmon, which are a threatened species, with underwater cameras at the fish ladder since 2000.

The highest number counted was 2003, when 6,103 were photographed.

The low point was 2008, when 1,125 were counted, but the number has increased every year since then, with 3,119 counted last year.

Chinook usually enter the Russian River after a two-year stay in the ocean, where they feed primarily on krill.

This is Russian River Getaways' major sponsorship event---what would this area be without Armstrong Woods and Austin Creek Reserve?

Fort Ross Re-Visited

Always a good day trip from the river, Ft. Ross is full of history, re-created by an entire village, in a stunningly beautiful setting. The establishment of the Russian colony in California is associated with the name of Ivan Kuskov, a native of the Vologda Region who worked for the Russian-American company at that time.

He undertook two expeditions to choose the place for a settlement and found it on a river, now called the Russian River, in 1811. In the spring of 1812, Kuskov settled down there with 25 fellow-countrymen. The Russians bought that land from the Kashaya Indians.

The indigenous population, including Kashaya, escaped tough colonization due to the Russian patronage. The Russians are celebrating the two hundred year anniversary by bringing some Kashaya Indiana to Russian. Funny, never thought of Russians celebrating Ft. Ross! We have a lot more history on our website.

Summer Concerts

The Guerneville Plaza summer concerts have sadly come to an end. Last night was the grande finale, with Carlos Reyes playing Latin Jazz to a very happy audience. The proximity to the Farmer's Market was perfect. We got there early and helped wipe out Raymond's Bakery's utterly delicious selection of breads and then stayed around for the music. Admission is free---what a great asset to our community--can't wait till this all resumes next spring.
My only complaint is that dogs are not allowed for the concerts, even though this is a public space where normally dogs are welcome. Doesn't seem right.
