Chinook Salmon, highly threatened, are coming up the Russian River to spawn in near-record numbers, signaling what may be one of the best returns of the Chinook in a decade. This year, with an abundance of water in Lake Mendocino, the amount of water released into the Russian River was doubled a week ago. This may have spurred more fish to come in from the ocean. No fishing of the Chinook at this time, but this is encouraging for the future.

Levi Leipheimer, a three-time winner of the Tour of California and a podium finisher in the Tour de France, has helped put Sonoma County cycling on the international map, living in Santa Rosa and training throughout Sonoma County. He also has hosted Levi’s Grand Fondo for the past three years, a recreational ride that has grown steadily and drew 7,500 cyclists on Oct. 1.
Speaking at a Healdsburg luncheon, Levi said “I really believe in Sonoma County. I think it’s the best place on earth to ride a bike,” he said, citing our redwood forests, the ocean and relatively traffic-free roads.
Many of our homes are along the Tour de California route and many folks come here from all over to train on Levi's Tour de France training route or just have fun cycling our country roads. For lots of information, see our outdoor activities site.

We do have homes available for this weekend. And I don't know why that odd

( 3 / 362 )Occupy Santa Rosa was the most coherent, well-planned protest imaginable. Nearly 3,000 people, three times what was expected, behaving respectifully. Few police and they seemed friendly and supportive as our monitors made sure traffic could pass. After all, they are part of the 99%. I'm very proud of our county and happy that my granddaughter and I shared this event.

( 3 / 450 )What a beautiful day---all sunshine with more to come, right through the weekend. Glad I didn't put the umbrellas and chair pads away. They are drying out nicely. Tonight is the full moon paddle---a group of locals who go kayaking to see the moon rising over the river, a spectacular, always awe-inspiring sight. If anyone wants to join in, just be at the Monte Rio boat launch at 7 p.m. It's not a long paddle, amateurs welcome. This will probably be the last one of the season.
