Elvis Impersonator

I have to admit I love good Elvis impersonators---quite astonishing how many guys make their living this way, even though Elvis has been gone a lifetime. Guerneville Plaza gets its own Elvis performance this week. 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday Aug. 2
The summer Rockin’ on the River series of free concerts this week features James Clark and his nine- to 12-piece band, The Jailhouse Rockers. Clark has performed with the Jordanaires and opened for Jerry Lee Lewis, the Drifters, Juice Newton and Steppenwolf. The group promises to transform Guerneville Plaza into Graceland’s front lawn with, according to Las Vegas’ “King of Kings” contest, one of the top 10 Elvis tribute bands in the nation. Russian River Getaways is a sponsor for these concerts and this one I won't miss.

Gourmet Hike in Armstrong Woods
Today was one of my favorite events of the year: the Gourmet Hike benefit for Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods in Armstrong Woods State Reserve. You start out at the picnic area with a lovely shrimp tapa, then you walk the trail, stopping at various stations for a new appetizer (seafood was the theme) and wine tasting. At each station there is live music. You end up at the amphitheater where there is a final appetizer (barbecued oysters with two different sauces) and dessert (lemon bars or brownies)and some great amplified music on the stage. Then you walk back to the picnic area where there are shuttles to take folks back to the outside parking.

This is the first time I've ever been too warm in the redwood forest---usually no matter now hot the day it will be pleasant and much cooler there, so I don't know why the heat seemed to penetrate on this day. But never mind, it's such a great event, always sold out. Good idea to get on the Stewards email list to get notice of events like this. My business is the major sponsor for the Stewards benefit events, so I always get tickets. I think of them as being for free, but of course they are really very expensive tickets! For the very best local cause.

Saturday in the Redwood Forest

1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday July 21 I'll be in Armstrong Woods for one of my favorite annual benefit events. Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods are combining a leisurely stroll among the old growth redwoods and ferns of Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve while offering mainly seafood appetizers and wine pairings as well as entertainment by local musicians. Trail ends in the Forest Theater with additional entertainment, a silent auction and more libations for purchase. Tickets – $35 for one, $65 for two – Until July 20 at 5:00 p.m. tickets may also be purchased on line. There will be tickets on sale at the event if not sold out. Follow the signs to the Group Picnic Area.

Healdsburg Water Parade

This Water Parade is becoming a big deal---lots of floats this year and the very best one was designed, constructed, and floated by friends of mine who make up the Peace Navy and enter floats in both water parades and regular street parades. For this, they added Vira, the California Mermaid, and two other mermaids, plus Indy the Merdog, all for a spectacular show.

A Beautiful Stretch of the Russian River

Took the pups for a hike today along a stretch of river that for most people is accessible only by boat. It borders the Korbel vineyards and the canoes from Burke's pass this way. It was a beautiful day, with many boats and ducks enjoying the sunshine and the gorgeous green water. Cleo chased her ball through the ludgwegia (that pretty, but invasive, plant in the foreground) and Tasha leaped up and down through the mass of plants in the water. A fine hike, with lots of happy folks on the river.
