Just can't help myself. The roses are so beautiful. Deadheading after taking the dogs to the beach. The river was running very fast for this time of year---wouldn't want to have to paddle upstream. But the river is also very low and will get lower until the dams go in the middle of June. Lots of happy humans and dogs on the beach this weekend. All the Russian River Getaways homes booked. The season is upon us![ add comment ] ( 1 view ) | permalink |

What a perfect day, touring gardens and homes in west Sonoma County. Everything was just beautiful and my brain is working overtime from all the ideas. This is something I look forward to every year---the 17th year, to be exact. I would like to get something going like this at the river--as a benefit for Stewards of the Coast and the Redwoods--but it takes a lot of organization and someone would have to step up.

Here's a photo of my collection of four Karen Ryer sculptures, surrounded by roses in my garden. This is her early work which I bought when it was very inexpensive. Now her work is magnificent and brings the prices it deserves. I love to go into her gallery---Withywindle Gallery---on Main Street in Guerneville to see what she's doing. Would love to add to my collection, but we'll see. Too hard to choose....

This afternoon I saw a river otter at Drake's Beach. At first I saw only his furry back, then he popped up, alert and curious, maybe 30' away, and we stared at one another for about 30 seconds. Unfortunately, he quickly caught sight of the dogs and popped back under, disappearing in a flash of brown fur. These are the moments that remind me why I can never live anywhere except the Russian River.
P.S. This isn't my photo and he wasn't swimming like this--he was completely upright, with only his head showing. But it's always impossible to get a photo at times like this. By the time, I could even click my camera it would be too late.

Finally the roses are in full bloom at the River. A little later than usual, but magnificent as always. This is a climate that loves roses and roses love us all back. Friends keep coming by to pick armloads of flowers and they don't make a dent. I'll try to get some better photos.
