Happiness!

One thing about a ball-obsessed dog is that there is no happiness like the happiness of that dog with her ball. If Cleo could smile while she's holding that ball, she would. There's no water too cold, no distance too far, no gravel too rough, to keep her from fetching that ball and her eagerness in waiting for the ball to fly through the air again never flags. Her joy is my joy, at least as long as my chuck-it arm holds out. Is that the best invention ever or what?

A Lot of Excitement in Duncans Mills
Who says nothing every happens in Duncans Mills, the sleepiest, smallest town in the Russian River area? Well, listen up:

A motorized hang glider that crashed into power lines over the Russian River left Duncans Mills residents without electricity for about nine hours on Sunday.

Straps from the hybrid machine became tangled in the lines as the pilot, a 33-year-old South Bay man, circled the area after taking off from Goat Rock beach. Luckily, although the glider contacted the power lines, the pilot didn't, and the glider just pitched him to safety into the river.

Fire officials helped retrieve his craft from waist-deep water and presumably the uninjured pilot went home to contemplate why he was not electrocuted that fine day. And all those shops in Duncans Mills were shut down for what would have been a busy shopping day.

Toasting with Iron Horse at the White House

Hear tell that Joy Sterling from Iron Horse Vineyards was a guest at a luncheon for the fellow thought to be the next leader of China and she brought along the wine for the occasion. Henry Kissinger, Senators Dianne Feinstein, Lindsey Graham and John Kerry; Human Rights Watch chief Ken Roth, New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman and CEOs John Watson of Chevron, Lloyd Blankfein of Goldman Sachs, Robert Iger of Disney and Jeffrey Katzenberg of Dreamworks, along with Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, and the guest of honor Xi Jinping all toasted with Joy's 2007 Chinese Cuvee. This is a limited release wine, $98 per bottle.

Whatever the disagreements between hosts and guest of honor, apparently there was no disagreement about the wine. West Sonoma County wine is the best!

Mr. Healdsburg
Just read about this and it sounds like fun:

Mr. Healdsburg Pageant
Saturday, Feb 25 7:30p
at Raven Performing Arts Theater, Healdsburg, CA
An all-male parody of the event everyone loves to hate: the anachronistic beauty contest. Come watch local gentlemen vie for the (plastic) crown by competing in all the usual categories: beachwear, formalwear, talent, and interview.

This is a FUNDRAISER for the Raven, and your votes (with $$$) help determine the finalists.

Just might have to drive the half an hour from Guerneville to see this!

Good-bye to Sam's Holey Cow diner
So sad, just received the announcement that the restaurant is closed permanently, just couldn't make the numbers work. I really enjoyed eating there and will miss it, but luckily we have a lot of great places to eat that are surviving and thriving. This was an initial venture into the restaurant business and that's always tough. Not easy to succeed in this business. Thanks, Jamie and Sam, for giving it a go.
